Split Mountain is the 8th highest peak in California at 14,065 feet elevation. It lies in the Sierra Nevada mountains (like most of the state’s high peaks) north of Mount Williamson and south of Mount Sill. Most visitors to Split Mountain will camp at Red Lake shown in this photo. The clear lake is perfect for swimming on a hot day and is full of fish.
Just getting to the Red Lake trailhead to visit Split Mountain is an adventure. It requires a high clearance vehicle and roughly a 1 to 1.5 hour drive on a very rough dirt road from the nearest town of Big Pine, CA. So hop in your Jeep, remember to bring a spare tire, pack your bathing suit, and enjoy the trail.
