High Angle

from $19.00

Mount Whitney, CA | 2019

The typically easy trail near the top of Mount Whitney (14,505 feet / 4,421 m) turns into a tricky high-angle snow slope in the winter. On this 3-day solo adventure, I began summit day (day 2) before dawn with a steep climb up “the chute” shown in Alpine Start. Continuing from Trail Crest at 13,700 feet elevation the trail follows the west side of a steep ridge that has relatively flat trail in the summer. The winter transforms this path into a steep slope that requires specialized gear & mountaineering experience. After successfully navigating this tricky section, I turned around to snap a picture of my tracks.
