Finger Lake below Middle Palisade
Near Big Pine, CA in the Sierra Nevadas | 2020
The reflection in Finger Lake mirrors the jagged ridgeline leading to Middle Palisade, the 14,019 ft (4,273 m) peak to the left of the photo. The Middle Palisade Glacier (top left) sits below the summit facing the lake. This glacier can easily be spotted from the nearest town of Big Pine, and the views get better the closer you get. Climbing Middle Palisade is serious business, involving some glacier travel and a tricky transition from the glacier to the rock wall before the challenging 1,500 foot climb up to the summit. An alternate approach known as the “red rocks route” allows skilled climbers to bypass the tricky transition, but replaces it with a class 4 climb involving crumbly, dangerous rock to grab onto. There is no easy way up!
